Web Hosting Provider XMission Transitions to Total Renewable Energy

In a bid to do its part to help the environment, web hosting provider XMission (http://www.xmission.com/) has transitioned to Total Renewable Energy, it was reported today. The company, also a broadband provider, has made the upgrade to “100% renewable energy” through Rocky Mountain Power’s Blue Sky program, which the company has been involved in since 2006. According to the company, it is the first Internet service provider in the US state of Utah to “purchase green power equal to its entire electricity use”. The company has also “implemented green standards” at its own data center by upgrading equipment and increasing efficiency of power and cooling systems. (more…)

Use Of .eu Domain Names Up 23% During Third Quarter

Registrations and renewals demonstrate strength of .eu domain Brussels, 19 November 2007 - EURid, the European registry for .eu, is pleased to announce that registrations for the .eu top-level Internet domain continued to grow during the third quarter of this year.

* New registrations stayed strong, with an average of 2760 new .eu domain names registered each business day during the month of September. * Third-quarter renewal rates stayed above 80 percent. * Actual use of .eu domains increased by 23 percent between the second and third quarters, according to DNS queries. The use of .eu domains for email and websites rose as well. * The number of registered domain names grew by 4.7 percent compared to the second quarter. (more…)

Tucows Announces Enhancements to Its Domain Parking Programs

Tucows Inc. , a leading provider of Internet services to web hosting companies and ISPs worldwide, today officially launched its domain parking programs that will share over $1 million in revenues with Tucows resellers over the next 12 months. The two programs, Parked Pages Program and Expired Domains Program, offer additional sources of revenue to resellers, including a slice of the growing domain name re-sale market through a share of Tucows Premium Domains service sales revenues.

Tucows domain parking programs generate additional revenues through the automatic serving of targeted pay-per-click (PPC) advertising. In the case of the Parked Pages Program, ads are displayed on unused domain names, while the Expired Domains Program serves advertising on domain names that have expired. Under the terms of these programs, Tucows offers a 50-50 split of all net advertising revenue with the reseller. (more…)

DNS servers still vulnerable

Poor configuration is leaving DNS servers open to attack, but overall the system is growing and modernising, according to a new survey.
DNS servers are increasing and modernising, but many are still vulnerable to attacks, according to a new study.
The third annual survey conducted by Infoblox and the Measurement Factory looked at the state of Domain Name System (DNS) servers across the public internet by surveying 80 million named servers.
DNS servers map domain names to numeric IP addresses. If such systems fail - from a malware attack or server failure, for example - then a company’s email and public-facing website will become unavailable.
According to the study, the DNS system is growing overall - showing that the public internet is experience growth. The internet-facing DNS server count jumped to 11.5 million this year, up from nine million in 2006.
“An increase was expected, but the actual number is a surprise - it’s a pretty substantial increase,” said Cricket Liu, vice president of architecture at Infoblox. (more…)
